Shetland's motto:

Med løgum skal land byggja

Translates as: ‘Through our laws the land will be built.’ The sense of the word 'land' is 'country', not just the earth. It applies as surely today as it did in the 15th century.

We can assure the people of Shetland that, so far as the existence of udal law is concerned, it does exist and it is quite real. It has, in fact, been in existence ever since it was introduced as the original and very first legal system for these islands.
